February 2019 Playlist
The days have remained consistently warm and sticky this month, but there is a change in the air. Mornings are starting to cool slightly and I’m becoming less of a sweaty mess from my walks to work. This month, I’ll be gradually increasing the perspiration levels as each song progresses. The last track in this February Playlist is a cracker.
I’m starting off this month’s playlist with a very summery and relaxing tune by the duo Sandboards, currently located in NZ. Japan Pt.2 has wowing synth sounds, a lush bassline and delay heavy additions that would be a glorious companion to any sunset set. I’m really digging the subtle and detailed sounds filling the space around the drums, bass and synth. It’s open skies, sand between the toes, with some good ol’ hip swaying kind of music.
Next up, we have a beautiful track by Melbourne producer and DJ, Loure, with his track Vue. Piano would have to be up there with my favourite instruments. Mix piano with a lengthy and out of control trumpet solo towards the end of the track and you have an absolute winner. The piano sets a wonderful tone after an extraterrestrial and spacey start. Vue takes you on a soothing journey that has an positive build and energy to it.
Philip Budny, a German producer and DJ, sets an almost sinister tone with his track Somnambulism. For me, this tune straddles a fine line between sinister and elegant. The repetition of the synth changes in and out of it’s sinister and elegant suits throughout the track. The deep, round and bubble-like bassline builds and fades, adding a dark persona. There is some fantastic sound design that contributes to the elegant aspects of the track, especially towards the back end. A repetitive but masterfully executed composition.
Enter the club room with this energetic remix by German legend, Black Loops. Wearing Baggys Like It’s 1995 was originally done by DJ Psychiatre, and Black Loops has really upped the energy with this remix. From the get go, the tempo is set to pump. The groovy bassline in this track is at the drivers seat for majority of the ride. Neat additions of a vast array of funky, vocal, violin and trumpet samples boost the fun flavour through the roof of this track. Gotta love that bass.
I’m leaving you this month with Green Lanes by British duo, Wayward. The duo have produced my favourite track that I have discovered this year. Everything about this track quenches my thirst for great electronic music. The atmosphere is set from the start with subtle funky wowing (never thought I’d used that term twice in a post) sounds, tambourine and lively bass. Enter the synth lead… From here, the build into the drop is simply genius. From the background snare rolls and swelling/pulsing sounds, to the funky-ass bassline, it has it all. And just when you think it can’t get any funkier, Wayward drop some cow bell into the mix towards the end. Bliss!
Until next month, keep earning your luck.
